*1971 Dodge Challenger Red, White/Blue w/Black Interior
1971 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack predecessor look like an ox cart with vinyl-upholstered seating for four.
But this ox cart pulls with the strength of 385 horses, a number the Magnum can’t touch, and its classic pony car
styling and fire-breathing attitude with 18-gallon tank full of premium leaded.
Plymouth introduced this fastback variant of its A-body Valiant compact midway through the 1964 model year,
getting the jump on Ford’s soon to be immensely popular Mustang by a matter of weeks.
While the original Barracuda never met Plymouth’s sales expectations, it refined the car and added
more power through its second generation (1967-1969), when the lithe fastback was joined by an equally
attractive hardtop coupe and convertible. When stylists were planning the design of Plymouth’s third-generation
“pony car,” which was to be built on a new E-body platform, Chrysler executives agreed that Dodge should have a slightly larger,
more luxurious “personal car” to rival the Mustang’s upscale cousin, the Mercury Cougar.
Dodge engineers made the E-body variant follow in the Cougar’s footsteps by lengthening and widening the Barracuda,
which gave it greater interior room, more sure-footed handling and a sportier stance. Working around the intermediate
B-body cowl, which allowed all Chrysler V-8s to fit in the engine bay, Dodge stretched the Barracuda’s 108-inch wheelbase
to 110 inches via a lengthened floor pan. Although it would be considered a large car today,
the Challenger’s 191.3-inch length (up 4.6 inches) barely edged it out of the compact class; it was also 76.1 inches wide,
versus the Plymouth’s 74.7 inches. Although trunk capacity increased from the Barracuda’s embarrassing
5.9 cubic feet to a merely meager 8, the real benefit to the Dodge Challenger’s upsizing was its more commodious cabin.
“The front seats are very comfortable, with plenty of elbow room,” explains owner Mike Ross. “These E-bodies are a little tight in the back, but I’ve sat back there, and it’s a good ‘2+2’…you wouldn’t want to sit three people back there, but for short trips, two will be comfortable.”
