*1994 Mattel (1959-35th Anniversary Barbie #1 Blonde Ponytail) Reproduction Special Edition*

This special edition doll is a 1994 reproduction of Mattel’s original 1959 #1 Barbie, created to celebrate Barbie’s 35th anniversary. It faithfully recreates the iconic blonde ponytail mold (#850) and commemorates Barbie’s debut in March 1959.

Historical Background:

In March 1959, Mattel introduced the first Barbie doll, model #850, featuring honey-blonde saran hair in a high ponytail, lightning-bolt eyebrows, side-glancing eyes, and a black-and-white zebra-striped swimsuit. Only about 350,000 of these originals were produced, making them some of the most coveted vintage dolls today.

By 1994, Mattel issued a limited reproduction of this #1 Ponytail Barbie to mark the 35th anniversary. The goal was to bring the classic design to a new generation while appealing to collectors who remember the original release.

Reproduction Details:

• Hair: Soft shiny polyester ponytail with loosely curled bangs (honey-blonde or dark brunette options)
• Eyes & Face Paint: Heavy black eyelids, painted white iris, big closed-red lips
• Body: Hollow flesh-colored plastic (won’t yellow to white) with visible mold lines on legs
• Foot Marking: MALAYSIA (no “Japan” mark, unlike the 1959 original)
• Swimsuit: Black-and-white striped helenca suit with clear plastic shoulder straps (original had none)
• Shoes & Accessories: Black open-toe heels, white sunglasses with blue lenses, gold-tone hoop earrings, clear doll stand
