*Within the United States military are elite units that are called upon missions requiring an unconventional response. These strategic operations forces are uniquely trained and equipped to handle situations that cannot be engaged by regular forces. Units such as the Army Rangers, 10th Mountain Division, 106th SOAR, Marines and SEALs provide their special skills and capabilities for direct action operations, anti-terrorism missions, special reconnaissance and other objectives.

Strategic operations forces contribute their expertise to the Untied States military in the support of reedom throughtout the world.

*Within the United States Marine Corps are small units called Maritime Special Purpose Forces (MSPFs). An MSPF is a sub-unit within a larger Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and brings specialized capabilities to this parent group.

MSPFs take part in a variety of missions including hostage rescues, demolitions, combat, and maritime interdiction operations. To prepare for an operation, the different elements in an MSPF are trained in the specific skills needed for the mission. Next, these separate elements are integrated, and the whole unit receives any additional instruction needed.

Their function may be specialized, but their range of action is wide; MSPFs may be sent into an urban hostage situation, then deployed to the high seas to take a ship by force.
