*Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978.
*Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy’s Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support.

*The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode.

*During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber.

*The USN Blue Angels #7 F/A-18B aircraft is a two-seat version that is flown to show sites by the show narrator. This aircraft has many duties at a show; it is used as a backup should one of the show aircraft go mechanical and to give rides to civilian VIP.

*Normally there are three demo rides per show, one to the press and two to from the Key Influencer (KI) program. The KI program selects individuals who shape attitudes and opinions of youth in their communities. Often during Friday practices the #7 aircraft is used in the #4 slot.

*USN Blue Angels #7 F-18B 163468 was manufactured as c/n 0691 and is on permanent loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum located at Pensacola, FL to the St. Louis Science Center, McDonnell Planetarium.

*Dedication took place on Dec 16, 2011. 2011 was the centennial of US Naval powered flight.
