*On Sept. 13, 1985, Maj. Wilbert Pearson took off along with other chaser aircraft, ascended to 35,000 feet and fired an ASM-135 ASAT Anti-Satellite missle into the heavens.
*The rocket separated from the missile after the first stage and propelled a miniature homing vehicle into space on a perfect collision course with the target satellite, marking the only successful satellite kill by an aircraft-launched missile in history.
*In commemoration of that historic day, 22 years later, “Celestial Eagle” was painted on the nose of 76-0084, and the aircraft was flown on a remembrance flight by Capt. Todd Pearson, an active-duty F-15 pilot from Hountain Home AFB, Idaho and the son of now retired Maj. Gen. Wilbert Pearson.
*The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972.
*The Air Force needed a fighter that could engage long range targets, a skill the F-4 did not possess.
*The F-15 has a pulse-Doppler radar system, which can track small high-speed targets up to 120 nautical miles away and can lock its missile onto targets up to 50 nautical miles away.
*With more than 100 aerial combat victories, the F-15 is said to be one of the most successful modern fighters.
**It is expected to remain in service until 2025.**
